Coalition Politics

A new era of coalition politics has begun in the UK with a Coalition government between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. With none of the three main parties (Conservatives, Labour or Liberal Democrats) receiving an overall majority in the May 2010 elections this lead to a hung parliament. The Conservatives gained the most seats but were still 20 seats short of an overall majority of 326 seats that they needed to win the election. This lead the party to enter talks with the Liberal Democrats so that combined the coalition would have well over the 326 seats needed to command the authority of the House of Commons. Coalition Politics tracks the progress of the first coalition government in the UK since the second world war.
